We built an open plan Granny Flat.
This ambitious yet fun learning curve took us around twelve months to complete. Owner builder from start to finish. This meant we needed a lot of help and advice from experts and trades including muscle power, project skills, management, and time.
It was a hectic time in our lives as I was currently taking a short break from work, studying a full-time degree in counselling therapy.
Mike was working fulltime and taking as many long weekends and holidays as possible to ensure we had the hours needed to complete the project.
Mike spent a lot of time on the project before the build even started, talking to council, city planners, draftsmen, plumbers, and engineers to ensure everything was approved before the first turn of the soil could begin.

Our not so little renovation project
I think it would be fair to say that even the seasoned renovator could be slightly overwhelmed by the task we had in front of us. Before we started any renovating, we had to change the locks and ensure the property was safe and weatherproof, as most of the exterior doors were in a poor state either by weather damage, or aged due to lack of maintenance and neglect.
The upstairs laundry door was the most damaged and as this was no longer a room and also had access to the small and unsafe top second floor balcony we decided to simply board it up for the mean time to ensure no further weather could enter the home.
The removal of carpet came next and luckily for us the lounge room was the only room with carpet but unluckily the old owners had covered the majority of the kitchen floor and hall way with a sticky vinyl tile that needed to be pulled up one tile at a time using strappers, and anything we could get our hands on.

This is not our first Renovation Rodeo…
We have worked on a few different projects in our time, some smaller and some larger building renovations that took up the majority of our time.
Mike and I both enjoy the renovation game and although we don’t have the time or money to do it full time, we certainly put a lot of time and effect into each and every build.
In the past we have been lucky enough to build a granny flat from scratch, and repair and build many smaller cosmetics renovations from painting to laundry redo’s, plaster, and floor repairs to landscaping as needed.
All in all, no matter what project we take on were always out to learn how to do things quicker, smarter, on budget and definitely with as much hands on as possible.
No matter how many projects we have completed the one that holds dear to our hearts and memories is building the granny flat, it was a labour of love, learning, practice and patients.
